Deputy Dara Calleary asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine the financial supports that are available to fishermen in County Mayo who are the owner-operators of vessels of 15GT and down to 5GT or less who experienced severe gear losses during the recent storms; if the current catch restrictions placed on these small boat owners can be temporarily lifted to alleviate the current pressures and if not, the financial supports that are available to those fishermen who are forced by these restrictions to fish further out to sea in unsuitable vessels; the steps being taken to address the deteriorating condition of piers in Achill County Mayo (details supplied) that are in poor condition and restrict fishermen in accessing their gear; his views on whether allowing the current losses to go unaddressed will result in the loss of gains made under the fisheries development plan 2007 to 2013; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
