Deputy Sean Fleming asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht if she is aware that while a national deer census is not practical a census of localised areas such as in national parks could be undertaken; that the Wild Deer Association of Ireland is the lead organisation representing those who work with deer and their management; that a member of the Irish Deer Management Forum had offered to provide resources and expertise to undertake a census of the sika and native red deer population in Killarney National Park in County Kerry, in advance of the proposed cull recently announced by her Department; her plans to accept the offer of assistance from the Wild Deer Association of Ireland before considering a cull of our last native red deer herd; if she and her advisers will hold an urgent meeting with the relevant experts to discuss the proposed cull; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
