Deputy Gary Gannon asked the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration the reason, in the proposed Garda Síochána (Powers) Bill 2026, Gardaí are being given powers to seize and search journalists’ phones and electronic devices without absolute protection of journalistic sources; and if he will commit to amending the Bill to explicitly guarantee that journalists’ confidential sources cannot be accessed without prior judicial determination, and only in circumstances of imminent risk to life or public safety.
