28 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if, in view of the fact that the RPII estimates that between 10% and 15% of all lung cancer deaths in Ireland, which is the equivalent of 150 to 200 deaths per annum, are linked to radon gas exposure, he will consider the introduction of a radon testing scheme for homes and a grant to assist with the cost of remedial measures in cases in which houses are found to be above the accepted safe level of radon; if, in view of the recent survey from the RPII showing that new homes fitted with barriers to prevent the build-up of radon gas still have high levels of the gas, he intends to undertake a review of the building control regulations introduced in 1998, particularly with a view to ensuring that the protective barriers are properly installed; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
