PQ 24

60 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government if his attention has been drawn to the call of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland that all homes being placed for sale on the market should be tested for radon gas and, when necessary, remediation should be included in the mortgage approval process; if his attention has been drawn to the results of recent research commissioned by the RPPI which showed that while more than three quarters of the population were aware of deadly radon gas and its dangers, the public was far too slow to take action to address the issue; the steps he intends to take to encourage people to take remedial action, in view of the fact that radon gas is believed to cause up to 200 deaths each year; if he intends to provide for a scheme to assist those living in pre-1997 houses to take remedial action to provide adequate protection for their homes; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
