Deputy David Cullinane asked the Minister for Health if she is aware of referrals covered under the treatment abroad scheme or cross-border directive to countries outside of Ireland for mesh implant procedures which are not currently permitted in the State; if she considers that this is an appropriate use of taxpayers money considering that access to surgeries domestically are paused due to medical advice received by previous Ministers; if there is adequate oversight of payment for such surgeries with taxpayers money considering the limits on such surgeries in this State; if she is aware of any other procedures which are not permitted in this State which the taxpayer is paying private consultants in overseas hospitals to deliver; if she considers that it would be appropriate for a consultant to refer a person to an overseas hospital to receive a surgery from that same consultant for a procedure which is not permitted in this State and for that procedure to be paid for by the taxpayer; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
