Deputy Richard Boyd Barrett asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine where is the science behind the Forestry Service/Coillte decision to reduce harvest rotation length from the UK scientific sustained yield measure of 45-60 years used by the old public forest manager the Forestry Service for decades before Coillte called for it to be reduced down to 25-30 years, and the impact this is having on increased soil, water and biodiversity impacts as well as reduced carbon stocks from cutting younger trees which cannot store as much carbon as older trees; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
