Durkan asked the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform the extent to which routine de-silting of rivers and waterways continues with particular reference to the removal of obstacles such as trees and debris building up in rivers and streams which are a major contributory cause to flooding in both urban and rural areas; if any evaluation has been done to compare the benefits of attenuation with de-silting and cleaning of waterways as a means of flood prevention and alleviation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
