PQ 409

409. Deputy Anthony Lawlor asked the Minister for Social Protection his views on the fact certain women are not eligible for the full rate of a State contributory pension because they chose to stay at home to care for their children or family relatives prior to 1994 when the homemaker scheme was first introduced; if he will agree that this affects a large proportion of our female pension earning population as it was much more common for women to remain in the home prior to the 1990s after which time it became more socially acceptable for mothers to be out at work; if there are any plans to deal with this sector of our society in order to give them due regard for the work they undertook in the home and ensure they receive full pensions; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
