Deputy Eoghan Murphy asked the Minister for Finance the number of persons in the covered institutions, by institution, on a variable rate mortgage; if he has spoken to any of the public interest directors in these institutions in relation to the matter of increasing variable rates, in contradiction to the trend of rate reductions from the ECB in the past three years; if he will provide the percentage of mortgage holders, by institution, in default or mortgage distress that are on variable rate mortgages; if the Regulator carried out an impact analysis in 2011 on this issue as instructed by Government; and if the banks have justified to the regulator or the Central Bank of Ireland the reason for the increase in variable rates, and his views on same.
