13 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Social Welfare in regard to the out of court settlement announced on 12 April 1994 of the case taken on behalf of 1,800 women over non-payment of transitional payments, if he will give details of the total legal costs incurred by his Department in contesting the claim; the estimated arrears which the 1,800 women will now receive; the total number of cases lodged with his Deparment which he intends to contest; if the case on behalf of the 1,800 women was included in the figure of 60 cases involving 5,000 plaintiffs which he referred to in reply to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 8 and 11 on 2 February 1994; the plans, if any, he has to amend the European Communities (Social Welfare) Regulations, 1992, in view of the out of court settlement; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
