Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the total number of beds available in public and private nursing homes for persons in need of ongoing long-term or respite care; the extent to which such places are fully occupied; the number of beds and/or wards closed or unoccupied for whatever reason in both sectors; the degree to which the inadequacies of the fair care scheme affect the situation; his plans to address these issues with particular reference to a review of the fair care scheme so as to provide for a more equitable and accessible system; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
