Deputy Paul Murphy asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade in view of cases (details supplied) and other cases known to the Irish and international authorities, his views that there is a systematic persecution against the trade union movement and the farmers’ movement, an increasing militarisation of many territories, questionable judicial and legal methods that do not meet the minimum standards of a fair trial, as well as abuse of prisoners in jails in Colombia; if he will raise these matters with the Colombian authorities; in view of the recently approved Free Trade Agreement with Colombia the steps the Irish Government will take to ensure that human rights standards are put in place and persecution of trade unionists and others is ended; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
