Deputy Carol Nolan asked the Minister for Education and Youth if she is aware that the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) has published a new draft leaving certificate history syllabus which excludes the period of First World War; whether she agrees that understanding of this period, including issues such as the conscription crisis and the number of Irish people who died in the conflict, is vital to understanding developments in subsequent decades; whether she agrees that to omit this period from the syllabus immediately in the wake of the “Decade of Commemorations” would be an astonishing and ahistorical decision; and whether she will intervene to ensure that this omission is not reflected in the final draft; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
