Deputy Aengus Ó Snodaigh asked the Taoiseach and Minister for Defence if alternative anti-malaria drugs, such as Malarone or doxycycline, were prescribed as a matter of course instead of Lariam, mefloquine, to soldiers of all ranks or just some ranks who were scheduled to be deployed in sub-Saharan Africa; and the medical criteria which was used to decide not to prescribe Lariam in individual cases or in the case of certain ranks.
