I want the Government to make it a specific criminal offence for any person to pretend to be serving or to have served in His Majesty’s Armed Forces. Any person gaining any financial or any type of help by pretending to have served in the Armed Forces past or present should be made a specific criminal offence under charges similar to fraud. This includes turning up to parades wearing medals.

I would ask change the law to allow adults carry approved pepper spray for personal self-defence. Current law leaves many people without an effective means of protecting themselves from violent attacks, particularly women from affected by the fear of sexual violence and assaults. Many people, particularly women, disproportionately affected by the fear of sexual violence and attacks in public spaces especially when travelling alone at night. Recent increases in violent attacks, hate crimes and assaults against people targeted because of their sex, religion, ethnicity or perceived identity have heightened concerns about personal safety. Many law-abiding people feel they lack an effective means of protecting themselves in an emergency.

We believe it should be standard to protect children under five who should receive the highest level of safety and legal protection from harm. The “reasonable punishment” defence currently allows parents and carers to legally hit children if the force used is judged “reasonable”. We believe adults should not decide what a toddler is capable of tolerating when they cannot fully grasp their developmental needs and experiences. These are vulnerable members of society, not yet able to regulate their emotions sufficiently or conceptualise the timeframe ‘next month’, and should not be expected to understand what it means when a parent hits them. Children under five would not recognise when the threshold of “reasonable punishment” has been exceeded, nor is it their responsibility to endure the long-term effects on their cognitive and emotional development, such as altered brain chemistry.

Current UK law strictly prohibits the carrying of any item for the purpose of self-defence, leaving women with zero legal means to deter or defend against physical and sexual violence. Violence against women is rising and declared a national emergency by police chiefs. The government needs to legalise an implement for women to carry to deter sexual attacks. This must be designed for use at a distance because of biological strength differences; once men get close, they can overpower women. Women in the USA can legally carry items like pepper spray while we are left defenceless. It is time we had access to an effective, non-lethal means of defence.
