Increase spending on defence in the UK

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 9 March 2026

The Government needs to focus spending directly to maintaining a minimum threshold of essential resources required to sustain a continuous defence if the world enters a new time of conflict such as an escalation of current hostilities. We must start now instead of just promising to increase it later There is a majority Government in House of Commons so they have full ability to create the budget as they want. With this ability they should be aiming to help the UK as a whole to the greatest extent possible however as such an inability to protect ourselves in times of conflict means they failed. While researching for my active citizenship project I realised that while we were spending our money on new high tech equipment we lacked the essential resources to sustain an effective defence.

Increase defence spending into armed forces

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 9 March 2026

An increased need to put more money into defence such as our Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force due to the decline of military availability (like the decrease in warships available). This could be made an option by decreasing spending into welfare, especially the money going to asylum seekers. The rising conflicts around the world, such as Russia and Ukraine, and now the war with Iran, the UK has already seen a delay in response (delayed sending of HMS Dragon) to help our bases and allies in the middle east that have been struck by drones and missiles. We have a limited number of warships available in the event of a large scale war with a country, with a significant decrease from other years, which shows the decrease in support for our defence. e.g 2002 with 60+ warships.

Issue defence bonds

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 8 March 2026

Government to issue defence bonds to support defence spending to boost recruitment, improve retention and manufacture materiel. In our view national defence aspirations are cut by a lack of investment in defence. As a veteran I reflect aghast at how the RN has shuffled diminished & become hamstrung. All government departments put competing demands on the public purse and I think social projects always seem to triumph. In my view, a society blind to the geopolitical and antagonist risks that threaten our security and interests, cogent appeals and socialisation by our military elite are ignored and the governments’ inaction, simply wastes time. Notwithstanding the evolution of warfare, we will always need personal and hardware to project our values. I think bonds will provide a ring fenced fund to kickstart the process NOW.

Increase defence funding to strengthen and expand all UK military forces.

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 8 March 2026

I would like the Government to increase the defence budget to rebuild and strengthen the UK’s Armed Forces. The United Kingdom faces growing global instability, and increasing security threats. A strong and capable military is essential to deter aggression and protect national sovereignty. The UK Armed Forces are currently in a dire state, with reduced personnel numbers, ageing equipment, and increasing operational demands. Increased defence funding is urgently needed to rebuild force numbers, modernise equipment, and restore military readiness so the UK can effectively defend itself.

The right for women to carry pepper-spray for intended purposes of self defense.

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 8 March 2026

I want the government to give women the right to safely and efficiently protect themselves whether it be from physical or sexual harm. There are too many women that fall victim to sexual assault and rape, their oppresors, un-convicted. We need to stop this, we need harsher laws on these attackers. Because as a person with indistinguishable power, respect, wealth and support. As a leader, as a human, a person. Is it not within your juridsticion to keep your mothers, daughters, nieces and sisters safe? To keep your people safe, the people that go through day to day life in constant strife, with no hope for change, with no faith in you, people who are so far out of reach, to maybe just come down from your podiums and empthaise with the people and their causes? If so I hope you consider this.

Make self defence classes mandatory for young girls in schools.

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 8 March 2026

Teach young girls what attack can look like and what the warning signs are. Teach young girls what they can do to defend themselves within the parameters of the law. Femicide is on the rise, women are assaulted everyday, it is time to stand up. Far too many women are victims from a young age and don’t know it or know how to defend themselves.

Establish and fund a National Defence Reinvestment Programme

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 5 March 2026

We urge the Government to launch a National Defence Reinvestment Programme, beginning with an initial capital investment equivalent to 5% of GDP. We are concerned the UK has become dangerously underprepared after decades of under-investment in defence (the so-called post–Cold War “peace dividend”). The Programme should include: Immediate strategic investment in building stockpiles and critical infrastructure for homeland defence. Sustained annual defence investment to ensure Britain possesses the forces, industrial base, and technological edge it needs. Rebuild national resilience to prioritise air and missile defence, munitions production, advanced technologies, cyber security, and the protection of critical infrastructure. Strengthen our defence industrial base and review how to support NATO better. Ensure a credible deterrence for the UK.

Do not increase defence spending due to situation in Iran

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 4 March 2026

Maintain UK military spending at its current level or reduce it, rather than introducing any increase linked to current tensions in the Middle East. We are concerned that the Government may use global instability and the situation in Iran to justify a rise in UK military spending. Oil price volatility is already increasing the cost of everyday essentials, and further defence spending increases would add additional pressure to public finances. We are concerned that raising military spending could lead to cuts to public services, worsening the cost-of-living pressures already facing households. We believe the Government should prioritise domestic well-being.
