Change to give protection to the blameless victims of the automatism defence

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 18 April 2025

Create stricter rules where the defence of automatism is used, How many cases are not being brought to trial because prosecutors have lost confidence that they can challenge evidence? How aware are the police, while they are investigating a case, about people invoking automatism? While the legal system rightly recognises that a person who acted involuntary due to a medical condition or external factor may not be morally at fault, this does not change the fact that real harm has been caused. The current system often leaves victims without justice, compensation, or closure. This creates a sense of injustice in the legal process while we protect the rights of defendants, we risk overlooking the suffering of innocent individuals. It’s not about punishing the blameless accused it’s about recognising the rights and needs of victims, and ensuring they are not forgotten in the pursuit of legal fairness

Exempt Armed Forces members & Veterans repaying Student Loans & create grants

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 17 April 2025

Exempt serving members and Veterans of HM Armed Forces from having to repay “Student Loans” (fee & maintenance components), no matter what degree (1st or 2nd undergraduate or postgraduate) they are taking. Create a grant system (for fees and maintenance payments) for serving members & Veteran’s. We think serving personnel and Veterans are often put off from studying for a higher education qualification due to the fees involved and the repayment of those fees. We think this is particularly common in those who were medically discharged from service because of the prospect of having to repay a large sum of money once they graduate. We think making serving personnel and Veteran’s exempt from having to repay the loans given would encourage more current personnel and Veteran’s to gain higher education qualification which could have the effect of creating a more qualified workforce for the future of the country.

Legislate to explicitly ban the Portsmouth Defence

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 15 April 2025

We urge Parliament to formally abolish the homophobic Portsmouth Defence, which allowed offenders to justify violence on the basis of same sex sexual advances. This undermines the Equality Act and put LGBTQ+ lives at risk. We call for urgent legislative reform to formally ban this defence. We believe this defence treated LGBTQ+ lives as less valuable. No one’s identity should ever justify violence. This defence has no place in a modern legal system. It must be clearly banned now.

Publish updated statistics on Armed Forces Veteran suicides annually

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 7 April 2025

We ask the Government to publish annual suicide data for armed forces veterans. We think this could help ensure transparency, improve mental health support, and prevent further loss of life by understanding the true scale of the issue. In 2024, the ONS published data about suicide rates in UK Armed Forces veterans in 2021. It showed 253 UK veterans died by suicide—nearly 5% of all suicides in England and Wales. Yet, no consistent data has been published since 2024. Without accurate, ongoing figures, we may not be able to fully understand the scale of the crisis or target support where it’s most needed. Publishing updated data could help save lives, shape better policies, and honour those who served by ensuring no one is left behind.
