Make political education compulsory in our secondary schools

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 24 November 2024

It is important that people know how our democratic system works, therefore the Government should seek to place unbiased and thorough political education on the curriculum, at secondary school level - whilst maintaining current guidance which ensures political impartiality in teaching. Implementing compulsory political education in our schools would be an effective step, in the right direction, of tackling the giant of ignorance. Not only would compulsory political education improve people's understanding of our democratic system, it would improve critical thinking skills and improve engagement with the system by which we are all affected.

Don't introduce unique child identifier and increased home education regulation

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 20 November 2024

We urge the government not to introduce a single unique identifier number for children and increased regulation of home education. We think its proposals would infringe on children’s privacy and parental rights, especially as elective home education is not in itself a safeguarding risk. We urge the rejection of proposals in the Keeping Children Safe, Helping Families Thrive paper to introduce a single unique identifier for children and more regulation of home education. We think these measures would infringe on children’s privacy and family rights, even though the paper acknowledges elective home education isn't in itself a safeguarding risk. We think these measures would also increase needless monitoring and could infringe on family freedoms and children’s rights.

Require more time spent in physical education classes in primary schools

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 16 November 2024

We would like an increase to the amount of weekly physical education sessions that primary schools deliver. We think this would help tackle the current obesity epidemic, improve mental health and improve confidence in children. We need to keep our kids moving and healthy. A 2022 study showed that the amount of children treated for type 2 diabetes in paediatric diabetes units in England and Wales had increased by over 50%. Children face a range of health issues. We think that more exercise in schools could help improve children’s health.

Reverse Cadet Forces Funding Cuts by Min of Defence and the Dept of Education.

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 15 November 2024

The govt have recently halved funding to State School Cadet units and Cadet Force Adult Volunteer Allowances. This is leading to reductions in activities and we think having a highly destructive impact on young people across the UK. We think this particularly impacts those from poorest backgrounds. The Cadets consist of the Sea Cadet Corps, the Army Cadet Force, the RAF Air Cadets and the school based Combined Cadet Forces. A Uni. of Northampton Study highlights the enormous value of Cadet Forces. https://www.northampton.ac.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/social-impact-cadet-forces-uk-2020.pdf It highlights return on investment from money spent on UK Cadet Activities (c£160m pa) results in savings of 3.8 times the amount invested. Please sign this petition to get these cuts reversed.

Legally require all secondary schools in England to teach financial education

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 13 November 2024

Financial education should be made compulsory by statute for all secondary school students in England. This would be delivered by all schools to all students. Currently, it is included in the national curriculum, but not all schools (e.g. academies or free schools) have to follow it. We believe that finance has never been so important. Money plays a vital role in all young peoples' lives, and yet we believe we fail to arm them with the financial knowledge that they need to take into adulthood. In modern times, online fraud is common, many children have bank accounts, students face rising university costs, and some young people need to navigate car insurance. To us, it is clear that we need financial education that is statutory in all secondary schools in England.

Support year abroad students - re-establish our EU education opportunities

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 13 November 2024

The UK needs to improve how they financially support year abroads, and give funding earlier. Embassies should 'fast-track' students on specific days during Spring/Summer months, to help students apply for the visas they need. The UK must re-establish higher education connections with EU countries. I am a university student, disappointed with the lack of support and help towards our year abroads, after Brexit. The additional costs that have been created because we left the EU, are not covered by The Turing Scheme, leaving year abroad students with difficulties at visa appointments, trying to evidence that they have sufficient funds to live/study/work abroad. Some countries expect us to have thousands of pounds in our own bank accounts as proof that we can afford our year abroad.
