That this House congratulates the British Healthcare Trade Association on the establishment of a self-regulation scheme for individuals working in the healthcare equipment and services sector which will help raise standards and ensure high quality for equipment users.

That this House notes with concern the unilateral attempt by Four Seasons Health Care PLC, a subsidiary of Alchemy PLC, to cut the pay and working conditions of employees at elderly care homes in the Borough of Wandsworth, some of whom were transferred from the public sector when the homes were privatised by Wandsworth Council, by the expedient of terminating existing contracts of employment, coupled with an offer of re-employment on drastically reduced terms; notes further that in one of the homes, Park Lodge, 94 accidents have befallen elderly residents since January this year of which only two were reported to the local registration unit; and calls on the Government to outlaw unilateral reduction in employees' working conditions and to introduce stronger regulation of elderly care homes in the for-profit sector.

That this House expresses its appreciation to the British Health Care Association for its work in supporting the NHS and its users; notes that cash and gifts of equipment made to the NHS by the member organisations of the BHCA continue year on year, that the 20 mutual companies who are members of the BHCA cover 1.7 million NHS patients and that these mutuals offer practical low-cost cover to meet the unavoidable additional expenses of visiting dentists, opticians and many alternative and complementary treatments, specialist consultations and investigations; further observes that benefits include provision of cash payments for time spent in hospital, grants for maternity and home help in addition to generous payments for personal injury and disability; appreciates the not-for-profit approach of this sector; looks forward to the BHCA and its members continuing to make a valuable contribution to a healthier nation; and invites the Secretary of State for Health and the Chancellor of the Exchequer to continue to take full account of this worthwhile contribution in the development of future health and taxation policies.

That this House notes that the use of powdered latex gloves in the healthcare industry has led to chronic, and even fatal, ill health for those workers who are at risk of reaction to latex; welcomes the work of the Latex Allergy Support Group, the Royal College of Nursing and the National Association of Theatre Nurses in raising awareness of the allergy and highlighting the danger posed by this type of glove; calls upon the NHS Logistics Authority to exclude all powdered latex gloves from their next catalogue; recommends that the Medical Devices Agency publishes guidelines regarding the clear labelling of products containing natural rubber latex; urges all NHS trusts, GP practices and private and voluntary healthcare establishments to implement the latest HSE guidance on the use of latex products; and calls for consistent recognition by the Benefits Agency of latex allergy as a prescribed disease.

That this House notes that public demand for complementary and alternative medicine is increasing rapidly, that 75 per cent. of the public support access to complementary medicine through the NHS, that currently 20 per cent. of the UK population use complementary medicines, that there are now around 49,000 complementary medicine practitioners in the UK and that an estimated ú1.6 billion is spent annually on complementary medicine in the UK; welcomes the initiative of the Department of Health, the NHS Alliance, the National Association of Primary Care and the Foundation for Integrated Medicine to produce a new information pack on complementary and alternative medicine for general practitioners, primary care groups and primary care trusts; observes that this pack is designed to inform clinicians and managers, and act as a resource for making sensible and locally sensitive decisions about commissioning the six complementary therapies which are most often provided acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic, herbal medicine, hypnotherapy and homoeopathy; and welcomes that exhibition in the Upper Waiting Hall mounted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Alternative and Complementary Medicine in the week commencing 19th June providing information on all aspects of complementary medicine and its role in an integrated system of healthcare in the UK.
