Summary

That this House welcomes the Liberal Democrat amendment to the Armed Forces Bill which would establish a legally binding Military Homes Standard for Single Living Accommodation (SLA); recognises that this amendment would require the Secretary of State for Defence to ensure that military SLA does not fall below the Decent Homes Standard; notes that tens of thousands of single and unaccompanied service personnel currently lack the legal protections against substandard housing afforded to civilian renters; further notes that the Liberal Democrats changed the law in the Renters’ Rights Act 2025 to ensure that military families in Service Family Accommodation are afforded these same protections; is deeply concerned however by figures which reveal that there have been over 30,000 urgent repair requests submitted so far this year and that nearly 30% of SLA do not meet the Defence Minimum Standard; also notes that two-thirds of forces personnel in Service Family Accommodation report dissatisfaction with the quality of maintenance; and calls on the Government to accept the Lords amendment and enforce the Military Homes Standard without delay to ensure that every service person has access to decent, safe and warm accommodation befitting those who serve their country.
