Summary

That this House is opposed to the proposals in the Treasury's consultation document Banknote Issue Arrangements in Scotland and Northern Ireland; notes that the ability of Scottish banks to issue their own notes is a longstanding tradition; further notes that although the consultation document implies that its main aim is to strengthen this arrangement, there are several issues that contradict this; believes that Scottish note issuing is a matter of pride and of promotion of Scotland and has well-founded economic benefits; and calls for the Treasury to abandon any plans it may have to tamper with the current arrangements which work perfectly well.
