Summary
That this House notes with deep concern the industrial action, workforce disputes and proposed job reductions affecting Scotland's higher education sector, including at the University of Aberdeen, University of Dundee, University of Edinburgh, Glasgow Caledonian University and Heriot-Watt University, as staff take strike action in response to proposed job losses, compulsory redundancies, budget reductions and concerns over the long-term sustainability of the sector; recognises the anxiety and uncertainty this is creating for university staff, students and local communities across Scotland; acknowledges the vital role Scottish universities play in teaching, research, innovation, skills development, economic growth and Scotland's international reputation; further notes concerns raised by trade unions regarding the scale of planned job losses and the impact these reductions could have on educational provision, research capacity and student experience; believes that neither staff nor students should bear the consequences of continued financial instability within higher education in Scotland; calls on university management to engage constructively with trade unions with the aim of reaching negotiated settlements; and urges the Scottish Government to take immediate action to address the financial challenges facing Scotland's universities, including undertaking an urgent review of higher education funding, facilitating meaningful dialogue between all parties, and bringing forward measures to safeguard jobs, protect students' educational experience and secure the long-term future of Scotland's higher education sector.
