Summary
That this House recognises Baby Loss Awareness Week and its vital role in raising awareness of the profound impact of baby loss on families across the United Kingdom; extends its deepest sympathies to parents, siblings and families who have experienced the loss of a baby; pays particular tribute to Richard Ganjavi, who, following the loss of one of his twin daughters, Bella, in August 2024 shortly before her birth, has shown exceptional courage in transforming personal tragedy into a source of hope for others; commends the publication of his novel, Whispers of a Purple Butterfly, written to help children better navigate grief and loss; notes the significant positive response to the book from bereaved families, therapists, charities, NHS professionals, funeral celebrants, teachers, SENDCOs both across the United Kingdom and internationally; further recognises the importance of opening conversations about baby loss, bereavement, grief, emotional wellbeing and the experiences of surviving siblings and twins; welcomes efforts to use literature, education and public engagement to encourage greater understanding of grief in childhood and in parenthood; further notes concerns that, whilst grief is included within the Relationships, Sex and Health Education curriculum from September 2026, the subject requires greater depth, dedicated resources and professional development for schools to address it effectively; and calls on the Government to work with bereavement organisations, education professionals, and those with lived experience such as Richard and his family, to ensure that children and families affected by baby loss and bereavement receive the understanding and support they need.
