Summary

We want the Government to: 1 Invest in secure HGV parking facilities with fencing, lighting, CCTV, & security patrols 2 Increase funding for roadside security measures at existing rest stops & laybys. 3 Introduce specific freight crime legislation to ensure tougher penalties for organised theft Despite the essential role that HGV drivers play in keeping goods moving across the UK, we feel they often lack access to secure rest areas, well-lit truck stops, and sufficient CCTV coverage. Many are forced to park in unsafe locations due to a severe shortage of secure parking facilities, putting both drivers and cargo at risk. Cargo theft from HGVs is a growing problem, with over 5,370 thefts reported in 2023, resulting in direct losses of £68.3 million.
