Summary

We think the First Past the Post system is becoming increasingly obsolete as the UK continues to move away from a two party system. We are now in a place where the party who may gain the most seats at an election could be the most unacceptable to the majority. We must protect our democracy. Recent YouGov polling indicates that 49% of Britons support proportional representation, compared with 26% who support First Past the Post. A 2024 YouGov survey indicated that 22% of voters intended to vote tactically at the general election, rather than for their preferred candidate. It is important that we employ an expression of democracy which supports the democratic will of the people.
