Reform Vehicle Excise Duty to remove vehicle value and emissions as factors, as these are already taxed via VAT and fuel duty. Replace with a fairer system based on vehicle weight, drive system and, where possible, road usage to better reflect real impact. As a petrol driver renewing my road tax, I believe VED is unfair and does not reflect real impact. My 1.7-tonne car driven 8,000 miles pays more than some heavier electric vehicles, for example a 2.7-tonne car doing 40,000 miles, despite causing less road wear. VED ignores mileage, weight and drive systems while taxing value and emissions covered by VAT and fuel duty. A fairer system based on usage and impact could help fund better roads instead of ones resembling the surface of the moon
