Summary
Amend the Medicines and Medical Devices Act 2021 so that the Patient Safety Commissioner’s core duties extend beyond medicines and medical devices to promoting patient safety across all NHS-funded healthcare in England. Patient safety concerns can arise from diagnosis, treatment, communication, clinical records and continuity of care, and can involve several NHS services or organisations. The Patient Safety Commissioner’s statutory remit is currently focused on medicines and medical devices. We believe patients should have an independent national commissioner able to identify systemic safety concerns across NHS-funded healthcare and ensure patients’ experiences inform improvements in safety.
