Summary
Provides for the orderly management of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Minnesota. Directs the Secretary of Agriculture to administer the areas in accordance with this Act and other wilderness laws. Directs the Secretary to permit motorboat and snowmobile usage on specified lakes and rivers within the Area. Directs the Secretary to terminate the timber sale contracts in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Provides for compensation for the termination of such contracts. Prohibits mining in the Area and provides for the acquisition of mining or mineral rights therein. Directs the Secretaries of Agriculture and the Interior, in cooperation with the State of Minnesota, to implement a program of intensive forest management within the Superior National Forest and on other Federal lands for the purpose of replacing softwood timber. Provides that nothing in this Act shall effect rights established by the treaties of the United States. Authorizes the Secretary of Agriculture to engage in planting and site preparation, and employ 20 additional employees, in the administration of the Superior National Forest. Directs the Secretary to develop an outdoor recreation program in the Area. Authorizes the Secretary to perform necessary maintenance work on the Prairie Portgage Dam.
