Summary

Hotel and Motel Fire Safety Act of 1987 - Amends the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 to require the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency to promulgate a model code and guidelines governing fire prevention and control in places of public accommodation. States that the code and guidelines: (1) must include requirements regarding automatic sprinkler systems, with an exemption for structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places; (2) may include requirements regarding smoke detectors; and (3) may allow for other exemptions. Requires the Director to formulate procedures regarding certification that a State has adopted and assumed responsibility for enforcing the model code and guidelines. Provides for the dissemination of information on hotel and motel fire prevention and control. Amends provisions relating to admission to the National Academy for Fire Prevention and Control to require admission of students from any State which is certified as having adopted and assumed responsibility for enforcing the model code and guidelines. (Current law requires admission of students from any State.)
