Summary
Ronald Reagan Recognition Act of 2000 - Directs the National Capitol Memorial Commission (Commission) and the Secretary of the Interior to: (1) create and recognize an exception to the moratorium on new memorials on the Washington, D.C., mall for a future memorial to former President Ronald Reagan; (2) work with the members of the Ronald Reagan Memorial Commission to recommend to Congress a permanent location for such memorial, to be situated in the area on the mall west of the U.S. Capitol and east of the Lincoln Memorial within the area designated by the Commemorative Works Act; and (3) cooperate with such Commission's members in designing and locating a suitable memorial and grounds. Directs the Secretary to assign by detail such support staff as are necessary to assist the members of the Ronald Reagan Memorial Commission in carrying out its responsibilities. Requires that a specified marker be erected and maintained at the future memorial site by the Secretary, designating the area as the "Future Site of the Ronald Reagan Memorial" no later than three months after selection of the site, until the memorial is completed, dedicated, and open to the public. Requires the Ronald Reagan Memorial Commission to: (1) raise funds from appropriate private sector sources necessary to design, construct, and maintain the memorial; (2) work with the Commission's members and the Secretary to recommend to Congress a permanent location as described for the memorial; (3) cooperate with the Commission's members and the Secretary in determining a suitable location and grounds for the memorial; (4) select a design from proposals solicited from qualified American architects; and (5) issue a report to Congress and the President on its activities every six months and issue a final report no later than February 6, 2002, including the proposed final design and location for the memorial.
