Summary
Obesity Prevention Act - Amends the National School Lunch Act to direct the Secretary of Education to award grants to State educational agencies to assist in creating model nutrition education and physical fitness programs. Lists activities that grant funds may be used for, including the development and implementation of State standards in health. Directs the Secretary to award grants to educational agencies, at least one per State, for the establishment of pilot projects for purposes of promoting healthy eating habits and increasing physical fitness. Lists activities that grant funds may be used for, including the development and implementation of nutrition education programs and curricula. Requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to carry out a program that encourages States to implement plans to carry out activities to assist obese children or children at risk of becoming obese. Sets forth a matching requirement for Federal grants of at least 15 percent of the costs of such activities. Establishes a Commission on Obesity Treatment and Prevention to oversee research, policy formation, and other activities of the Federal Government regarding the prevention and treatment of obesity. Directs the Secretaries of Health and Human Services and Education to establish the "President's Health and Fitness Awards" for elementary and secondary schools. Requires the Secretaries to establish "President's Health and Fitness Teacher Achievement Awards" for teachers, coaches, or related personnel and for local educational agencies. Amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act to include nutrition and health education programs in authorized local activities under 21st century community learning centers.
