A bill to amend the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 to provide grants to States for the establishment, equipping, and operation of emergency communications centers to make the national emergency telephone number 911 available through the United States.

Summary

Provides for Federal assistance to State and local governments in establishing, equipping and operating emergency communications centers to make 911 the national emergency telephone number. Authorizes the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration to make grants under this title to assist State and local units of Government in establishing such number. Provides that no grant shall exceed one-half the cost of implementing such a center. Limits the amount of such grant which may be used for personnel compensation to no more than one-third the granted amount, or that amount expended by the State from its own funds for such purpose. Authorizes $5 million for fiscal year 1971 and $7.5 million for fiscal year 1972 to carry out the provisions of this Act.
