Modern Railway Transportation Act

Summary

Modern Railway Transportation Act - Permits under the Interstate Commerce Act any carrier by railroad subject to this Act to change, in whole or in part, the operation or service of any train or ferry operated by such carrier. Authorizes the Secretary of Transportation, after notification of such change, to obtain a continuation of the operation of such train or ferry upon determination that such continuation is essential to the national or regional economy, or to the national defense. Directs the Secretary of Transportation to administer the provisions of this Act. Grants jurisdiction to the district courts of the United States upon complaint of the Secretary or other party in interests. Authorizes to be appropriated such amounts as are necessary to obtain continuation of service by such carrier. Permits, under specified restrictions, any carrier by railroad subject to this part to establish or revise rates, fares, or charges, and classifications for the transportation of property. Imposes a fine of not more than $10,000 upon conviction of discrimination with respect to rates, fares, charges, and classifications, or of paying rebates to shippers.
