Criminal Justice Reform Act

Summary

Criminal Justice Reform Act - Authorizes Federal funds for demonstration projects testing the effectiveness of reforms in recruiting, training, compensating, and supervising of police and other law enforcement personnel. Requires States and localities to expedite criminal court procedure, including increasing the number of judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys engaged in criminal cases. Requires the strengthening of State and local correctional institutions, including improvements in: (1) classifications of incarcerated persons; (2) equipment and facilities; (3) vocational and educational programs; (4) separation of juveniles; and (5) parole and drug abusers and alcoholics. Directs the State to study the consolidation of law enforcement personnel and the application of criminal laws to alcoholism, drug addiction and abuse, gambling, vagrancy and disorderly conduct, and related areas. Authorizes to be appropriated the sums necessary to carry out the provisions of this Act.
