Summary
Condemns the persecution of Cuban poet Maria Elena Cruz Varela for the peaceful expression of her political views. Calls on the Government of Cuba to: (1) immediately release Varela and end its repression of Criterio Alternativo and other dissident and human rights groups; and (2) permit a national debate among all Cubans to facilitate the peaceful search for economic and political transformation which has broad-based support among the Cuban people.
