Summary
Calls upon the Government of Sudan to: (1) honor international obligations to prosecute slave owners and educate individuals being held as slaves concerning their rights; (2) release all slaves and return them to their homes; and (3) investigate abuses relating to slavery. Urges the United Nations (UN) Security Council to condemn these acts of slavery. Deplores the fighting of the National Islam Front. Advocates the strengthening of the border between northern and southern Sudan. Encourages: (1) human rights organizations to facilitate safe passage for slavery victims in Sudan; and (2) the President to expand the comprehensive sanctions applied to Sudan since 1997 to include sanctions regarding slavery. Urges: (1) cooperation among the western powers to address slavery and other human rights abuses in Sudan and in support of the proposal of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for international action to facilitate the decommissioning of weapons used by Sudanese militias that take slaves; and (2) the Commissioner, the UN Children's Fund, and the European Union to end the use of euphemisms regarding the practice of slavery in Sudan.
