Summary

Commends those Sierra Leoneans who have demonstrated their love for peace, law, and order. Supports the signing of a cease-fire agreement on May 18, 1999, in Lome, Togo, by President Kabbah of Sierra Leone and Foday Sankoh, leader of the Revolutionary United Front. Urges all parties to remain engaged in the peace process and make progress in bringing a peaceful and lasting solution to the crisis in Sierra Leone. Commends: (1) Reverend Jesse Jackson, the U.S. Presidential Special Envoy, for the promotion of democracy in Africa; and (2) Gnassingbe Eyadema, President of Togo, Adwoa Coleman, representative of the Organization of African Unity, and Francis G. Okelo, special representative of the United Nations Secretary General, for their involvement in bringing about this peace process. Encourages all parties to fully implement the Abidjan Peace Accords. Urges: (1) the U.S. Government to appoint a Special Envoy for Sierra Leone; and (2) the Government and the international community to continue to work with all parties to ensure a lasting peace that will end the conflict in Sierra Leone.
