Summary

Congratulates Eduard Shevardnadze, the former President of the Republic of Georgia, and the leaders of the political opposition for their courage and patriotism in dealing with the recent political crisis in Georgia peacefully and bloodlessly. Calls upon: (1) the interim government to conduct free, fair and open elections; and (2) the President of the United States to urge all sectors of Georgian society to respect and preserve the free exercise of the essential elements of democracy .
