IMPACT OF DIGITAL DIVIDEND ON BRITISH ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 18 December 2006

That this House applauds the work done by the British Entertainment Industry Radio Group (BEIRG) in highlighting the imminent threat to a £15 billion per annum British entertainment industry posed by the Digital Dividend Review being undertaken by Ofcom; recognises that there is no feasible commercial alternative to the use of analogue equipment in the Programme Making and Special Events sector and that Ofcom's plan to auction off the analogue spectrum is likely to damage irreparably a world leading industry and lead to the end of live performances and events; notes that the use of sufficient interleaved analogue spectrum is essential for the continued production of world class entertainment; and urges the Government to guarantee that sufficient quality and quantity of such spectrum be available to prevent the collapse of such a renowned and valuable UK industry.

PARTICIPATION IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 13 December 2000

That this House considers that following the passage of the Local Government Act 2000, there should be a drive to make local government more inclusive; urges that more be done to encourage the involvement of more young people, women and those from different ethnic groups; and congratulates the National Association of Councillors on the recent launch of the 'Restoring the Balance' campaign which strives towards achieving greater community participation and more representative democracy in local government.

TOLLING OF THE MERSEY, THAMES AND HUMBER CROSSINGS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 18 April 2000

That this House notes that the promoters of the Mersey Tunnels Bill are economical with the truth in asserting in their statement in support of the Second Reading, that Parliament has already accepted the principle of annual index-linked toll increases for esturial crossings by enacting the Dartford-Thurrock Crossing Act 1988; cannot be fooled, remembering that the following provisions of the 1988 Act are hypothecated and time-limited to repaying the capital cost of the new bridge crossing the Thames; welcomes the fact that the day when the cessation of tolling shall, in accordance with the Act, soon be achieved; considers that if the Government want, as a general principle, to continue or introduce tolling of esturial crossings then this shall only be done following a period of consultation, the publication of a White Paper and a Public General Act and not piecemeal by private Acts; considers that there must be parity of treatment throughout England and Wales as to the tolling regime and charges including the dispersal of the revenues; and believes that if continued tolling for the Thames, Mersey and other crossings was to be enacted this would, logically, have to include currently free crossing of the Humber.

PANORAMA OF LONDON

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 17 January 2000

That this House considers that the helium balloon at Vauxhall provides good value for the tourist with its panoramic views of the London skyline; notes that, in contrast to the high-tech millennium wheel, it works; considers that it has additional advantages over the wheel in as much as it is aesthetically pleasing and does not blight the landscape of a heritage site; and hopes that the time-limited planning permission for the wheel's existing siting is strictly adhered to and that the clock starts ticking from the time of its erection and not from the commencement of operation.
