MOBILE TELECOMMUNICATIONS MASTS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 27 November 2000

That this House deplores the actions of the mobile telephone company, Orange, in arrogantly imposing its mobile telecommunications masts on local communities without consultation and without local authority planning consent; further deplores the fact that Orange has already identified by the Stewart Inquiry as the organisation most critised for its actions in siting masts; applauds actions already taken by Government to impose stronger planning controls on mobile telecommunications mast sites; and calls for further action to be taken, including a retrospective requirement that any mast sited without local consultation may be subject to an order to cease operation if it is outside the guidlines proposed in the Stewart Inquiry, or if retrospective planning permission is not granted.

FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 21 November 2000

That this House condemns the practice of female genital mutilation which violates the human rights of girls and women to bodily integrity and has adverse health and social implications; notes that an estimated 130 million women and girls in the world have undergone FGM and that two million girls are at risk to undergoing some form of the procedure every year; further notes that in the UK women who have undergone FGM are increasingly presenting themselves to healthcare professional, and specialist clinics are treating hundreds of women with FGM-related complications; regrets that there have been no prosecutions under the UK Prohibition of Female Circumcision Act 1985; welcomes the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and reproductive Health's Hearing's Report and Survey Analysis on FGM; and urges Her Majesty's Government to act on the recommendations in the Report and amend the existing law on FGM in the UK.

COUNTRYSIDE BILL AND SPECIES AND HABITAT ACTION PLANS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 10 May 2000

That this House welcomes the great level of cross party support that exists for protecting wildlife, and notes that 349 honourable Members signed EDM 11 in the last session, in support of the Wildlife Bill proposed by the honourable Member for Brighton Pavilion, and also by a cross-party group of honourable Members; welcomes the inclusion of many clauses from the Wildlife Bill in Part III (Nature Conservation and Wildlife Protection) of the Government's Countryside and Rights of Way Bill, but notes that it does not contain those key clauses that relate to species and habitat action plans; and, reaffirming the strong cross-party support for these clauses, urges the Government to amend the Countryside and Rights of Way Bill to provide a legislative footing for species and habitat recovery, since this would deliver a real difference for wildlife in wider countryside, outside of protected sites.

DFEE SEX AND RELATIONSHIPS GUIDANCE

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 7 March 2000

That this House believes that the new sex and relationships education guidance from the DFEE will play a crucial role in achieving the Government's target of halving the conception rates of under 18 year olds by 2010; notes that, to this end, the guidance needs to give unambiguous advice to schools so that they are able to meet the needs of all children in developing effective relationship skills; and further notes that to do this, the guidance must recognise the diversity of family structures whilst acknowledging the importance of marriage and other committed relationships.

CLOSURE OF BARCLAYS BANK TODMORDEN

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 7 March 2000

That this House condemns the decision by Barclays Bank plc to close its branch in Todmorden; notes with grave concern the large number of other closures announced by Barclays, many in semi-rural areas, causing considerable inconvenience to those local communities; notes that Barclays have only given one month's notice to the loyal customers and regrets the lack of corporate responsibility for the elderly, disabled, those without transport and the business community of Todmorden and district; regrets the demise of the concept of banking as a service to the community; deplores the practice of, choose your customer, choose your community, based on profit; and urges Barclays to reconsider their decision for the benefit of the community.
