That this House commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States; remembers the 2,977 innocent lives lost, including 67 British citizens, and the countless families whose lives were forever altered on that fateful day; pays tribute to the immense bravery of the first responders, including firefighters, police officers, and medical personnel, who risked and sacrificed their lives to save others; acknowledges that 9/11 was a world-shifting event that fundamentally reshaped global security, international relations, and our collective consciousness; emphasises the enduring importance of remembering this tragedy to ensure that future generations understand the profound impact of terrorism and the vital need to continue to defend democratic values and freedom; and reaffirms the UK’s steadfast commitment to standing united with our allies against extremism and against those who believe that terrorism could ever be an acceptable tool understanding that there is always an alternative to this form of evil.

That this House remembers the 32 members of the Prison Service who lost their lives largely as a result of civil unrest and the Troubles, due to their employment; expresses its profound gratitude to them for their faithful service to upholding and maintaining the justice system in Northern Ireland for the protection of the wider public; recognises the many others and their families who have been seriously injured or subject to prolonged verbal, psychological intimidation or abuse; acknowledges the deep importance of continuing to remember and commemorate the sacrifices of those who lost their lives in the prison service; further expresses sincere sympathy to the families and friends of all those who have lost their lives in the course of duty; and calls on the Government to support a memorial in each council area in Northern Ireland to honour the 32 lives lost.

That this House notes with deep concern the forthcoming trial of Mr Jimmy Lai, a British citizen, founder and proprietor of the Apple Daily newspaper, under the National Security Law in Hong Kong; expresses alarm at the prospect that he will not receive a fair trial, and has been denied his first choice of legal counsel; further notes with profound concern his continued imprisonment on multiple other charges for the past three years; expresses urgent concern that, having marked his 76th birthday on 8 December, he faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison in Hong Kong; observes that his unjust arrest and imprisonment illustrate the grave dismantling of freedom of expression, press freedom, freedom of peaceful assembly, democracy and the rule of law in Hong Kong; welcomes the recent meeting of the Foreign Secretary with Sebastien Lai, son of Jimmy Lai; urges the Government to lead the international community in highlighting the human rights situation in Hong Kong in general, calling for the repeal of the National Security Law in particular and for the immediate and unconditional release of Jimmy Lai specifically, in the forthcoming Universal Periodic Review at the United Nations; and calls on the Government to publicly and repeatedly demand the immediate and unconditional release of Jimmy Lai, as the United States, the European Parliament, and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of assembly and of association, among others, have done.

That this House notes the 50th anniversary of the murder of UDR soldiers Kenneth Smyth and Daniel McCormick who were killed on the 10th of December 1971; notes that Kenneth was off duty and that Daniel had left the UDR and they were slaughtered as they headed to work together; further notes that no one has ever been brought to justice for this evil terrorist murder that saw these men brutally slain for no other reason than serving Queen and Country in the UDR and that the family still mourn their loss; highlights that whilst other 50 year old crimes are still being investigated at great cost to the public purse, the murder of Kenneth and Daniel remains unsolved; and reaffirms the commitment of this House to support justice for all victims of the Troubles, and not only for those who have politically motivated support.
