That this House congratulates Her Majesty's Government on its renewed efforts to educate young people about the dangers associated with smoking; notes the considerable tax revenue raised in excise taxes on cigarettes; is concerned about the export of UK manufacturing jobs which will be brought about by the implementation of the draft Directive on the manufacture, sale and presentation of tobacco products; is concerned that these job losses will bring none of the health benefits claimed by the European Commission; applauds The Sun newspaper for highlighting the disproportionate impact of this Directive on jobs in the UK, particularly in the constituency of Easington; and calls on Her Majesty's Government to take account of the representations of the Tobacco Workers Alliance and change its position on the export ban in the Directive.

That this House congratulates Barry Thompson, Store Manager, Helen Pattison, PR Manager and all members of staff at the Asda's store, Peterlee, in the constituency of the honourable Member for Easington, for their community involvement in promoting The Big Read, The Big Sum, Millennium Making a Difference Day and other activities with children and senior citizens; congratulates all in the store in reaching the final of the Golden Bear Award; and wishes the staff every success with the Michael Row Appeal, a further example of good community relations, along with the initiatives of promoting breast cancer awareness, fund raising for McMillan nurses and developing relationships with community groups.

That this House deplores the closures of Barclays Bank, Easington Colliery, and Lloyds TSB in Blackhall without any consultation with users, community leaders and other sectors within these communities; expresses dismay at the lack of responsibility for the elderly, disabled and those without transport and at a time when these communities are undergoing immense regeneration programmes; and calls upon the Government to institute a formal consultative procedure which would examine the consequences of such closures and ensure that adequate banking services are available to meet the needs of customers within their own community.
United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 29 February 2000
That this House calls upon the Government to invite the trustees of the Mineworkers Pension Schemes to enter into immediate negotiations to seek a favourable adjustment of surpluses of the funds to enable an enhancement of benefits to members of the BCSSS and the MPS, especially the 28,000 pensioners who receive a pension of £10 per week or less; recognises that the 50 per cent. government clawback of the current surpluses is unrealistic and an affront to former mineworkers, in view of the modest risk now involved with the funds owing to the continuing decline in the numbers of beneficiaries drawing pensions; and believes that a proportion of the Government percentage should be directed into former coalfield areas for the benefit of coalfield communities.

That this House commends the National Pub Watch Steering Committee and its work and commitment towards promoting social responsibility in the licensed trade which will bring about a safer environment in licensed premises through the exclusion of offenders associated with acts of violence and anti-social behaviour and the promotion and introduction of chard-proof glassware in pubs; and seeks the support of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group in persuading the major brewers to commit themselves in principle and financially to the efforts of National Pub Watch as have Youngs, Shepherds Neame Brewers and the National Association of Licensed House Managers (T & GWU).

That this House recognises the commitment of the Government towards former coalfield areas in granting planning permission for the retail and leisure development on Dalton Flats and in the constituency of the honourable Member for Easington and that the ú36 million cost of the development will be met totally from the private sector and that 1,000 much-needed jobs will be created which will inspire a new confidence in an area which has been recognised as fourth worst in a national league of deprivation; congratulates councillors, officers and staff at Easington District Council, town and parish councils, the Dalton Flats Action Group and the thousands of Easington residents who worked so hard in preparing and supporting the planning application; looks forward to the beginning of a new era in an area so worthy of regeneration; and extends its congratulations to the Deputy Prime Minister for making such a bold and imaginative decision in granting the planning consent.
