That this House acknowledges the centenary year of St Aidan’s Episcopal Church, Clarkston; welcomes this milestone marking 100 years of the Church playing a pivotal role in the local community; joins the congregation in commemorating this important anniversary; notes that a special centenary service of thanksgiving and commemoration took place on Sunday 3 December at which the Rt Rev Kevin Pearson, Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway preached; recognises the importance of St Aidan’s Church to the community and the broad range of open, welcoming activities which the Church is involved in locally; appreciates the continued care of the congregation for the local community and those further afield; and wishes all involved with St Aidan’s Church the very best for the next 100 years at the heart of the local community.

That this House notes that Saturday 17 December marks the 80th anniversary of the Government first publicly acknowledging the Holocaust in the House of Commons chamber; recalls that then Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr Anthony Eden MP, during a statement to the House regarding a joint declaration from European allied countries condemned in the strongest possible terms this bestial policy of cold-blood extermination; understands that the House responded to this statement with a spontaneous moment of silence; appreciates the vital work carried out now by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust, ensuring people across the UK are aware of the Holocaust and more recent genocides; appreciates their work to ensure that testimony is shared and lessons learned are understood and remembered; and notes that on Thursday 15 December a moment of silence will be observed in the House and survivors of the Holocaust will be present in the Speaker’s gallery.

That this House recognises the significant charitable work carried out by Aileen Kane from East Renfrewshire over the past four decades; notes that Aileen, aged 81, has fundraised for Children in Need since 1985; recognises Aileen initially began fundraising by doing a sponsored walk from Giffnock to the Sick Children’s Hospital in Glasgow, which she continued to do annually for 15 years; appreciates that Aileen was presented with the Sir Terry Wogan Fundraiser of the Year award at this year’s BBC Children in Need’s Appeal Show; further notes that Aileen raised £2,500 this year by walking around Rouken Glen Park wearing Pudsey pyjamas and a bright pink tutu; and wishes Aileen all the very best for her future fundraising endeavours.

That this House congratulates Kaleidoscope Trust on reaching the milestone of its 10th Anniversary; notes that the Kaleidoscope Trust is a UK-based charity focused on fighting for the human rights of LGBT+ people across the Commonwealth and that it funds, fights for, and empowers those upholding the human rights of LGBT+ people by working with governments, change-makers, and civil society organisations to effect meaningful and lasting change in the lives of LGBT+ people everywhere; recalls that when Kaleidoscope Trust was established it recognised that the problem it faced then, and still does today, is that the violence, discrimination, and persecution experienced by LGBT+ people across the Commonwealth reflected discriminatory laws inherited from the colonial-era and their social and cultural residue; welcomes the fact that Kaleidoscope Trust continues to play its part in solving that problem, one that continues to cause unwarranted, unfair and unacceptable harm to LGBT+ people, and those who defy restrictive gender norms; and wishes the Trust every success over the next ten years, which look to be years of great upheaval and uncertainty for so many LGBT+ people and organisations around the world, as it works with its partners and people of goodwill to achieve a world in which LGBT+ people are free, safe, and equal absolutely everywhere.

That this House appreciates this has been a challenging year and that this Christmas will be a difficult one for many families; recognises that there are unsung heroes in all our communities working hard to ensure Christmas magic is delivered where it is needed most, even against the odds; notes the tireless efforts of community based groups and organisations including Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas, in making Christmas possible for families and children all over West Central Scotland; appreciates the vast undertaking and huge efforts which have enabled thousands of individually selected Christmas gifts to be collected, funded, sorted, wrapped and delivered; appreciates the enormous work of East Renfrewshire resident Julie Griffin and her colleagues in bringing together the generosity of donors, with a wide range of referring organisations who support families experiencing difficulties; believes that this selfless kindness reflects the true spirit of Christmas; and wishes ‘Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas’ well for their continued endeavours.

That this House applauds the fantastic artistic endeavours of the almost 700 East Renfrewshire primary school children, from schools across the local area, who took part in the 2020 Christmas picture competition organised by the hon. Member for East Renfrewshire; notes that children produced festive and creative artwork, designed to share good cheer; appreciates the efforts and participation all of those who took part; acknowledges the high standard of all entries received; heartily congratulates all winners; recognises that the overall winner was Adam Geejo of St Cadoc’s Primary School; understands that the winners in the P1-P2 category were Aasiyah Ali of Maidenhill Primary School and Molly Ness of Netherlee Primary School; notes that the winners of the P3-P5 category were Keeva Smith of St John’s Primary School and Phoebe Mann of Eaglesham Primary School; appreciates that the winners of the P6-P7 category were Olivia Aitken of Hillview Primary School and Fergus Cao of St Joseph’s Primary School; thanks the outstanding school teams across East Renfrewshire for all their efforts throughout this challenging year; and wishes teachers, families and children a peaceful and happy Christmas.

That this House congratulates Giffnock Soccer Centre on a successful first 25 years of operation; notes that the club was started by just 14 parents to provide a safe, fun environment in which children aged 5-12 could develop their footballing skills and has grown to over 200 coaches and 1,200 children of all abilities including a separate girls section and a section for those with disabilities; further notes that the club used various East Renfrewshire facilities until it was able to acquire its own facilities at Eastwood Park and Norwood Playing Fields in 2014; recognises that the Club have been involved in the development of the local East Renfrewshire League, which began in 1995 with 23 teams and now provides non-competitive fixtures for 200 teams, with a Giffnock Soccer Centre representative on its Management Committee continuously since the beginning; further recognises that the club has worked with the Scottish Football Association (SFA) on coach development and has retained its emphasis on providing football for all abilities, with some participants going on to make the grade in the senior game, including current Captain of the men’s Scottish National team, Andy Robertson, and others who began with the club as 5 year olds who are now helping to develop the next generation of footballers; and records appreciation that the club has forged very good relationships with East Renfrewshire Council, the SFA and local leagues and clubs to the benefit of thousands of children over the last 25 years.

That this House congratulates Barrhead Baby Cafe on five successful years, providing free support to local mums who want to breastfeed; applauds the hard work of all those facilitating the work of Barrhead Baby Cafe; further congratulates them on the vital social support provided to new and expectant mums, alongside the provision of useful information about breastfeeding from peer supporters and NCT professionals; understands that this enables breastfeeding to be sustained for longer periods, because of the key role of peer supporters; appreciates the value of partnership working in this environment; and looks forward to the next five successful years for all involved with the Barrhead Baby Cafe.

That this House congratulates East Renfrewshire resident Usman Ali on being the first young Scot to be named a Queen's Young Leader for his work to improve social and economic opportunities for young people in the community and his wider public service; recognises that he is the first young Scot to be recognised with this prestigious honour, being awarded to 60 young people across the Commonwealth each year between 2014 and 2018; and understands that the award will be presented to Usman by Her Majesty The Queen at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in June 2017.

That this House congratulates the congregations, past and present, of St John the Evangelist Parish Church, Barrhead, on the 175th anniversary of their Church; notes that the Right Reverend John Keenan, Bishop of Paisley, dedicated the Church on the occasion of its 175th year; recognises that the congregation has worshipped in the current church building in Aurs Road since 1961, having been in temporary accommodation in the Parish Hall and Tower Rais, following the said destruction of the old gothic St John's Church in an electrical-related fire in 1941; values the immense contribution to local and international communities made by the work of those associated with the Church over the 175 years it has been in Barrhead, including supporting local young people and families in need, schools in Malawi and other countries and helping the work of Mary's Meals; and wishes all associated with St John's Parish Church well for the next 175 years and beyond.
