NORTHERN IRELAND EXILES

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 19 December 2001

That this House notes that many people have been and, in far too many cases, remain exiled from their homes and loved ones in Northern Ireland owing to threats of paramilitary intimidation, assault and murder; echoes the comment of the Victims' Commissioner, Sir Kenneth Bloomfield that 'it would be a strange aspect of any society attempting reconciliation if convicted prisoners were able to return home while unconvicted people felt unsafe to do so'; contrasts this continuing scandal of paramilitary fatwas with current negotiations to waive outstanding legal proceedings against several members of the Provisional IRA - the 'On-the-Runs' - who are wanted in connection with terrorist offences, including murder in Northern Ireland, but who are living outside UK jurisdiction; and urges the British and Irish Governments to bring pressure to bear, in their discussions with the paramilitary-linked parties, to lift their expulsion orders and threats against those who have been exiled so that they can return home in safety from this Christmas.

PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AND FALUN GONG

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 14 November 2000

That this House notes the People's Republic of China's apparent policy of opposition to Falun Gong practitioners, including labour, prison sentences and harsh treatment detention; welcomes the raising of these concerns with the Chinese authorities by Her Majesty's Government and our European partners; and urges the Government to consider further initiatives, to underline the commitment of Britain to freedom of religion or belief in China, and to work cooperatively and considerately with the Chinese authorities to understand the rationale for their current position and seek ways to achieve progress regarding policy towards Falun Gong practitioners in China.

LICENSING HOURS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 31 October 2000

That this House regrets the failure of the Government to take measures to extend licensing hours for pubs and clubs in England and Wales for celebrations of this year's New Year's Eve, which falls on a Sunday night; notes that most licensed premises must therefore close at 10.30p.m., unless licensees make applications to local magistrates for an extension; further notes that mass applications to magistrates would result in a needlessly increased workload for magistrates, with no guarantee of uniformity in the granting of applications, plus further delay for licensees who have not planned festivities because they have been expecting Government guidelines on opening times for that night; and calls upon the Government to extend the licensing hours on New Year's Eve according to the limits set in the Government's deregulation order brought in for last year's millennium celebrations.

ANDY KERSHAW PROGRAMME

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 14 June 2000

That this House very much regrets the BBC's decision to end Andy Kershaw's late-night Radio 1 programme, which for 15 years has been introducing listeners to a very wide range of music and musicians from around the world, as well as other musical areas; believes that his programme is a key element in the BBC's public service broadcasting role, by exposing listeners to a breadth of musical experience which they would otherwise never encounter; notes the extraordinarily high level of public and media opposition to the termination of Mr Kershaw's programme; and calls on the BBC to re-instate the show by September.
