JAPANESE WHALING

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 19 December 2001

That this House expresses its outrage at the whale hunting carried out by Japanese ships in the Antarctic's Southern Ocean; notes that the Southern Ocean is recognised as a no-go zone for hunters and that whaling is still banned under international law; recognises that the Japanese get round international law by claiming they are carrying out scientific research, even though it is widely known that the whalemeat will be sold for commercial purposes; further notes that the Japanese have been using overseas aid to enlist support from the Caribbean islands to support the legalisation of whaling; and calls on the British Government to do all it can at the forthcoming meeting of the International Whaling Commission to be held in Shiminoseki to highlight the disgraceful manner in which the Japanese are acting in relation to whaling and ensure that whale hunting is not legalised.

AMMUNITION FOR CHALLENGER II TANKS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 25 July 2000

That this House notes the work undertaken at Derian House, a hospice for terminally ill children in Chorley, and other similar children's hospices; admires the staff of such hospices who perform a very difficult role with dedication and distinction; but notes with concern that, because of the small number of such hospices dedicated specifically to children, they are often under pressure in terms of room and finance; further notes that, because of the lack of children's hospice provision, one hospice often has to serve several health areas despite being funded only by the local area, as is the case with Derian House; and calls upon the Government to review the provision of hospices for children with a view to increasing financial support and making that support more equitable, by funding them through health regions rather than health areas.

U571

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 5 June 2000

That this House notes the release of the feature film U571 in the UK, which purports to tell the tale of the capture by the United States Navy of a Nazi submarine during World War II, with the intention of retrieving an Enigma code machine and code books, and that this story is entirely fictional; notes that the capture of the Enigma machine actually took place in May 1941 when the British destroyer HMS 'Bulldog', commanded by Captain Joe Baker Cresswell, disabled and seized submarine U-110, after which members of its crew, led by Lt. Davide Balme and including, amongst others, Chief Engineering Officer G.E. Dodds, then risked their lives to board the stricken submarine, facing the danger that it might sink at any time; notes that members of the boarding party were decorated for their heroism in retrieving the encoding device and that King George VI described their actions as perhaps the most important single event in the war at sea; and regrets that Hollywood has chosen to distort the truth and detract from the valour of the British sailors concerned by appropriating the story for its own financial gain.

RUGBY LEAGUE SILK CUT CHALLENGE CUP SEMI-FINALS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 16 March 2000

That this House notes with concern the fact that both Rugby League Silk Cut Challenge Cup semi-finals played on the 25th and 26th March are to be staged in Yorkshire, leaving the North West without a semi-final for the flagship event in the Rugby League calendar; believes that in the case of the Warrington Wolves versus Bradford Bulls match, to be held at Leeds Rugby League Football ground, this clearly puts Warrington supporters at a disadvantage being forced to travel beyond Bradford to Leeds; and calls on the Rugby Football League to ensure that venues are found which are convenient to both sets of supporters, and that the North West is not left without a Challenge Cup semi-final.
