Hospitality VAT reduction and the VAT Is The Problem campaign

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 12 October 2026

That this House recognises the vital contribution made by the hospitality sector to local economies, employment, tourism and community life across Wales and the UK; notes with concern the significant financial pressures facing pubs, restaurants, cafés, hotels and other hospitality businesses as a result of rising operating costs; further notes that the current standard rate of VAT of 20% places an additional burden on businesses already struggling with increased energy, staffing and inflationary costs; believes that the hospitality sector has a crucial role in supporting jobs, skills development and economic growth, particularly in rural and coastal communities; observes that many European countries apply reduced VAT rates to hospitality services, often around 10% or lower, in recognition of the sector's economic and social value; therefore calls on the Government to reduce VAT on hospitality to 10% in order to support business viability, stimulate investment, protect jobs, encourage tourism and help consumers with the cost of living; and endorses the campaign entitled VAT is the Problem and its call for a fairer VAT regime that enables hospitality businesses across Wales and the UK to thrive and continue serving their communities.

Financial redress for 1950s-born women

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 18 December 2024

That this House supports the campaigns of women failed by the implementation of UK Government changes to the State Pension Age for women born after 6 April 1950 by way of the 1995 and 2011 Pension Acts; commends the work of campaigners who have fought tirelessly over many years for justice, accountability, and financial redress; notes the recommendations of the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman report into the communication of State Pension changes in March 2024, that found maladministration by the Department for Work and Pensions, and recommended compensation at Level 4 of the ombudsman scale, £1,000 to £2,950; condemns the UK Government’s decision to refuse compensation for 1950s women despite that report’s recommendations, and despite acknowledging that maladministration did take place; is disappointed the 2019 promise that a Labour government would create a system of recompense for affected 1950s women has been broken; and calls on the UK Government to reverse this decision, and finally deliver justice for the 3.6 million affected 1950s-born women.
