SITUATION IN THE MOLUCCAS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 12 December 2000

That this House notes with deep concern that the Christians in the Moluccas are facing increasing threats to their lives and freedom; further notes that the Jihad militant movement, Laskar Jihad, has declared their plan to resolve the 'Christian problem' in the next few weeks, stating that 'there will be no churchbells ringing in Ambon by Christmas'; was concerned to hear Christians on Seram island and in North Maluku have received an ultimatum either to convert to Islam or face being killed; and urges Her Majesty's Government to ask the Indonesian Government to take immediate and appropriate action to avert this situation and to allow for international intervention and assistance where necessary.

COMMUNITY AND AMATEUR SPORTS CLUBS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 22 June 2000

That this House welcomes proposals to define, in statute, community amateur sports clubs; acknowledges such clubs' invaluable role in improving public health, building stronger communities and providing recreational opportunities, particularly for young people; recognises that many clubs have long struggled to make ends meet; notes that comparable arts organisations receive far more favourable tax treatment, as a result of the outdated and anomalous Recreational Charities Act 1958; believes that the introduction of limited tax exemptions could reduce CASC's overheads and, above all, increase their ability to raise money from their local communities; notes the growing cross-party support for such proposals; and believes that the implementation of these measures would be warmly welcomed, particularly among the 1.5 million volunteers upon whom the long-term wellbeing of British sport is dependent.

RUGBY AT TWICKENHAM

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 9 February 2000

That this House is disappointed by the decision of local magistrates to end the tradition of a post-match drinking licence following matches at Twickenham; believes that the progressive departure of fans from the ground helps the flow of traffic, use of public transport and reduces the overall disturbance to the local community; notes the steps taken by the RFU to improve facilities around the ground for fans leaving; welcomes the fact that there have been no alcohol-related arrests in the grounds at Twickenham; and therefore urges the police and the local authority to work closely with the RFU to restore the licence.
