SAFEWAY PLC AND POSTAGE STAMPS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 6 December 2000

That this House deeply regrets the decision of Safeway Plc to sell postage stamps at discounted prices during the pre-Christmas period as a loss leader; believes that, despite the attractions of cheaper postage at Christmas to consumers, this example of predatory pricing will greatly damage the profitability of sub-post offices and other independent retailers already facing difficulties and in many cases closure; believe that postage stamps issued by the Royal Mail should be sold and retailed at standard rates of purchase price and discount so as not to encourage such abuses by large retailers; and calls on the management of Royal Mail and the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry to better protect the interests of small retailers and sub-post offices.

LISTING OF GM SEEDS

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 14 April 2000

That this House opposes the decision of the Government to proceed with the addition of Chardon LL genetically-modified maize to the national seed list; notes that this is in contradiction to the express promise to maintain a moratorium on the commercial exploitation of GM crops until trials have been successfully completed; further condemns the charge of ú30 on individuals and organisations who wish to place a written objection to listing, and the further charge of ú60 on those who wish to appear at a hearing; regards this as a restriction on freedom of speech and an affront to basic democratic rights; notes that, following changes to regulations, even this opportunity will in future be removed to be replaced by ministerial discretion; and calls upon the Government to open the seed listing process to full and public scrutiny, and to withdraw the proposed listing of Chardon LL.

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 9 February 2000

That this House deplores the action of the European Commission in promoting the addition of GM seeds to the Common Catalogue, contrary to the position of the European Parliament; calls on the United Kingdom Government to refuse applications for GM maize to be added to the United Kingdom National Seed List; and considers that no GM varieties should be approved for commercial growing until farm-scale trials are satisfactorily completed and potential threats to the environment can be safely discounted.
