United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 17 December 2007

That this House notes with concern the decision to deport Alhassan Bangura to Sierra Leone; expresses alarm that Mr Bangura is being forced to return to the country he fled at the age of 15, escaping witchcraft and threats to mutilate him; notes that this deportation affects not only Mr Bangura but his girlfriend and newly born child and ignores the valuable contribution he has made to his community through playing for Watford Football Club; further notes the overwhelming support from fans at the Championship football club where a rally in support of Mr Bangura was held on Saturday 15th December; welcomes the support of the honourable Member for Watford who has drafted a petition calling for Mr Bangura to remain in Britain; emphasises that this high-profile case is one among many facing the same grave situation; and calls upon the Home Secretary urgently to review the case of Mr Bangura and grant him indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

That this House deplores the arrest of Maya Evans at the Cenotaph for publicly reading out the names of British soldiers who have died in Iraq without prior authorisation from the Metropolitan Police; considers that section 132 of the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005 is a fundamental affront to free speech, the right to protest and the traditions of this country; and calls on the Government to repeal the powers at the earliest opportunity.

PROCUREMENT IN THE HEALTHCARE SECTOR

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 15 December 2005

That this House is concerned that the Government's policy on procurement in the healthcare sector will undermine patient choice, innovation and patient care, particularly with the provision of stoma care products and services, pressure area care, chemical reagents and wound care, where patients, industry and professionals are expressing alarm at the potential for increased risk to patient safety and well-being; recognises that an emphasis on financial savings could be counter-effective in passing the cost on to other areas of public sector provision; notes that the Assistive Technology sector of medical devices, in particular, is highly service-orientated and failure to recognise this in value for money calculations will result in patients being seriously disadvantaged; and calls for the current policy to be brought to an immediate halt and for more appropriate models to be reviewed urgently in conjunction with patients, industry and professionals.
